Setting up error messages for DC order limits on the Shopify store

Are your customers being blocked but not seeing an error message?

If customers are hitting your order limits but don't see any notification explaining why they were blocked, this guide will help you enable and configure error messages so customers understand your store's limits.

Troubleshooting: Why aren't my error messages showing?

If you've set up order limits but customers aren't seeing error messages when blocked:

  1. Check that the app embed is enabled — The DC Order Limits app embed must be turned on in your theme settings (see steps below)
  2. Verify "Enable cart error notifications" is ON — This toggle controls whether any alerts display
  3. Check your alert type setting — Make sure you've selected either "Corner Notification" or "Modal Dialog"
  4. Test in an incognito window — Browser extensions or cached themes can sometimes interfere

Setting up error messages

To set up error messages, follow these steps:

1. Access the Online store dashboard

  • Log in to your Shopify admin dashboard.
  • Navigate to the online store and click on Customize

2. Find the App embeds

  • In your theme editor on the home page, look for App embeds
  • This page will provide you with the DC order limits app elements

3. App Embeds

  • Enable cart error notifications: Activates or deactivates the error messages inside the extension itself, leave this on if you want any alerts to show.
  • Alert type: Picks the style of alert shoppers will see, choose Corner Notification for a small toast in a screen corner or Modal Dialog for a full-screen pop-up.
  • Corner Alert Placement: Sets which corner the toast appears in when Corner Notification is selected, options are top-right, top-left, bottom-right, or bottom-left.
  • Modal title: Text that appears as the heading of the modal alert when Modal Alert is selected, you may edit this to your liking
  • Auto dismiss corner alerts: Lets corner notifications hide themselves automatically, turn it on to avoid the shopper having to click close.
  • Auto dismiss delay (seconds): How many seconds the toast stays visible before disappearing when Auto-dismiss corner alerts is on, move the slider or type a number.

4. Save and Activate

Click "Save" to apply the settings. Once saved, the rules are live immediately.
