Using DC Order Limits with Shopify Bundles

This guide explains how DC Order Limits works with Shopify's native Bundle app and provides workarounds for known limitations.

How Shopify Bundles work

When a customer purchases a bundle created with Shopify's native Bundle app, Shopify adds the child products (the individual items inside the bundle) to the order separately. The bundle product itself acts as a container, but the actual line items are the component products.

Which limit types work with bundles

The following limit types work reliably with bundled products:

  • Per-order quantity limits — Limits on how many items can be added to a single cart/order
  • Per-order price limits — Limits on cart total or line item totals
  • Mixed cart rules — Rules that restrict product combinations in the cart

Known limitations

Lifetime/customer purchase limits may not track bundle purchases correctly.

Because Shopify processes bundle components as separate line items, lifetime limits applied to the bundle product itself may not accumulate as expected. This is a known limitation we are actively investigating.

Recommended workarounds

If you need to enforce lifetime limits on bundled products:

  1. Apply limits to child products instead of the bundle — Set your customer purchase limits on the individual products that make up the bundle. Since these are what actually appear on the order, they will be tracked correctly.
  2. Use per-order limits — Per-order quantity and price limits work reliably with bundles for restricting how much can be purchased in a single transaction.

Example setup

If you have a bundle containing Product A and Product B, and you want to limit customers to purchasing this bundle twice in their lifetime:

  1. Create a customer purchase limit rule
  2. Instead of selecting the bundle product, select Product A and Product B as the target products
  3. Set the maximum quantity based on bundle contents (e.g., if each bundle has 1 of Product A, set limit to 2)
