Shopify limitation with preorder purchase options
When offering preorder purchase options to your customers through the DC Preorders app, it is essential to understand the limitations set forth by the Shopify platform. Being aware of these can help you plan your preorder strategy effectively and communicate clearly with your customers.
Purchase options are currently only available on paid DC Preorder plans
General Limitations for All Purchase Options
Payment Methods
- Local Payments: Customers are unable to use local payment methods for any purchase options. This means payment methods that are specific to a certain region or country cannot be processed
Shopify POS
- Incompatibility: Purchase options are not usable through Shopify POS. If you conduct sales in person using Shopify's point-of-sale system, preorder purchase options will not be available.
Draft Orders
- Exclusion: Purchase options cannot be applied to draft orders. Draft orders are often used for wholesale, manual orders, or special cases, and do not support preorder functionality.
Discount Limitations
- 'Buy X get Y' Offers: The popular 'Buy X get Y' discount setup is not supported with purchase options. Preorders will not be eligible for these types of discounts.
Known Limitations for Deferred Purchase Options
Payment Gateway Requirements
- Shopify Payments or PayPal Express: To enable deferred purchase options, merchants are limited to using Shopify Payments or PayPal Express as their payment gateway.
Single Deferred Payment Due Date
- Due Date Uniformity: If an order includes multiple products with varying deferred payment due dates, the system will default to the earliest due date for the entire order. It's not possible to have separate due dates for individual items within a single order.
Order Edits API
- Product Removal Restriction: Through the Order Edits API, only the removal of a product with a deferred purchase option is supported. Other modifications or edits to such orders are not supported.
Custom Checkouts
- Checkout Customization: Stores with checkouts customized using checkout.liquid will find that deferred purchase options are not supported. For these stores, an upgrade to checkout extensibility is necessary to use deferred purchase options.
