Shopify Plus vs Non-Plus: Checkout Rules Differences

Checkout Rules (Payment Rules and Shipping Rules) have different capabilities depending on your Shopify plan. This article covers all known limitations for stores not on Shopify Plus.

These are Shopify platform restrictions, not limitations of DC Order Limits. Shopify's Checkout Extensibility APIs enforce these rules at the platform level.

Payment Rules: Plus vs Non-Plus

Feature Shopify Plus Non-Plus (all regions)
Hide payment methods ✓ Works ✗ Not available
Rename payment methods (except wallets) ✓ Works ✓ Works
Reorder payment methods ✓ Works ✗ Not available
Set payment terms at checkout ✓ Works ✗ Not available

What can non-Plus stores do? Non-Plus stores can rename payment methods (like PayPal, Cash on Delivery, and buy-now-pay-later options) to make labels clearer for customers. Hiding and reordering require Shopify Plus.

Credit card customization (US/Canada)

For non-Plus stores in the United States or Canada, credit card customization rules (targeting "Shopify Payments") are silently ignored by Shopify at checkout. The rule will save, but won't take effect. This limitation doesn't apply to:

  • Stores in other regions
  • Shopify Plus stores

Wallet and logo-based payment methods (all plans)

Some payment methods have restrictions regardless of your Shopify plan:

Payment Method Hide Rename Reorder
Shop Pay ✓ Yes (Plus only) ✗ No (has logo) ✗ No
Apple Pay ✓ Yes (Plus only) ✗ No (has logo) ✓ Yes (Plus only)
Google Pay ✓ Yes (Plus only) ✗ No (has logo) ✓ Yes (Plus only)
Other wallets ✓ Yes (Plus only) ✗ No (has logo) ✓ Yes (Plus only)
Gift cards (native) ✓ Yes (Plus only) ✗ No ✗ No

Shipping Rules: Plus vs Non-Plus

Feature Shopify Plus Non-Plus (via public apps)
Hide shipping options ✓ Works ✓ Works
Rename shipping options ✓ Works ✓ Works
Reorder shipping options ✓ Works ✓ Works

Good news: Shipping Rules work the same for Plus and non-Plus stores when using a public app like DC Order Limits.

Shipping rename limitation (all plans)

The carrier name is always prepended to shipping method titles and cannot be removed. For example:

  • You rename "Standard" to "Standard Shipping"
  • The result shows as "UPS Standard Shipping" (carrier prefix auto-added)

Quick Summary

Non-Plus stores can:

  • ✓ Rename payment methods (except wallets with logos)
  • ✓ Hide, rename, and reorder shipping options

Non-Plus stores cannot:

  • ✗ Hide payment methods
  • ✗ Reorder payment methods
  • ✗ Customize credit cards (US/Canada only)
  • ✗ Set payment terms at checkout
  • ✗ Rename wallets (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay)

Why these limitations exist

Shopify's Checkout Extensibility APIs enforce these rules at the platform level. These aren't limitations of our app — they're restrictions built into Shopify's checkout infrastructure.
