Payment Rules: Hide, Rename, and Reorder Payment Methods at Checkout

Payment Rules let you control which payment methods appear at checkout and how they're displayed. You can hide options you don't want customers to see, rename them for clarity, or reorder them to highlight your preferred methods.

Looking to customize shipping options? See Shipping Rules to hide, rename, or reorder delivery methods at checkout.

What you can do with Payment Rules

Action What it does Example
Hide (Plus only) Removes a payment option from checkout Hide "Cash on Delivery" for orders over $500
Rename Changes the label customers see Show "PayPal" as "PayPal (Fastest checkout)"
Reorder (Plus only) Changes the position in the list Put "Shop Pay" at the top

Creating a Payment Rule

  1. Open DC Order Limits in your Shopify admin
  2. Go to Checkout Rules → Payment Rules
  3. Click Create Rule
  4. Choose your action (Hide, Rename, or Reorder)
  5. Select which payment method(s) to target
  6. Add conditions if needed
  7. Save the rule

Changes apply at checkout immediately after saving.

Shopify Plus vs. non-Plus stores

Payment Rules features vary based on your Shopify plan. This is a Shopify platform limitation, not a limitation of DC Order Limits.

Feature Shopify Plus Non-Plus plans
Hide payment methods ✓ Works ✗ Not available
Rename payment methods (except wallets) ✓ Works ✓ Works
Reorder payment methods ✓ Works ✗ Not available

What can non-Plus stores do? Non-Plus stores can rename payment methods (like PayPal, Cash on Delivery, and buy-now-pay-later options) to make labels clearer for customers. Hiding and reordering payment methods requires Shopify Plus.

Why? Shopify restricts hide and reorder actions for payment methods to Plus stores only. This is enforced at the platform level.

📋 Full breakdown: See Shopify Plus vs Non-Plus: Checkout Rules Differences for the complete list of what works on each plan, including wallet limitations, credit card restrictions by region, and shipping rules.

Additional limitations (all plans)

Some payment methods have restrictions regardless of your Shopify plan:

Payment Method Hide Rename Reorder
Shop Pay ✓ Yes (Plus) ✗ No (has logo) ✗ No
Apple Pay ✓ Yes (Plus) ✗ No (has logo) ✓ Yes (Plus)
Google Pay ✓ Yes (Plus) ✗ No (has logo) ✓ Yes (Plus)
Other wallets ✓ Yes (Plus) ✗ No (has logo) ✓ Yes (Plus)
Gift cards (native) ✓ Yes (Plus) ✗ No ✗ No

Credit card customization (US/Canada)

For stores in the United States or Canada that are not on Shopify Plus, credit card customization rules (targeting "Shopify Payments") are silently ignored by Shopify at checkout. The rule will save, but won't take effect. This limitation doesn't apply to stores in other regions or to Shopify Plus stores.

Targeting payment methods

You can target payment methods in several ways:

Target mode What it means
By name Target a specific method like "PayPal" or "Cash on Delivery"
By type Target categories like "Buy now, pay later" or "Wallets"
All except one Hide everything except your preferred payment method (Plus only)

Finding your payment method names

The name you use in your rule depends on the type of payment method:

Manual payment methods (Bank Deposit, Cash on Delivery, etc.)

Use the exact name as it appears in your Shopify admin. The name is the same everywhere — what you see in admin is what appears at checkout, and what you target in your rule.

Credit card payments

Shopify shows a generic "Credit card" label at checkout, but you must target the provider name instead. For most stores using Shopify Payments, target "Shopify Payments" — not "Credit card".

To find your payment provider names:

  1. Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Payments
  2. Review your active payment providers
  3. Note the provider name — this is what you target in your rule

Tip: Payment method names are case-sensitive. "paypal" won't match "PayPal".

Adding conditions

Conditions let you control when a rule applies. You can combine multiple conditions — when you do, all conditions must be met for the rule to take effect.

Cart value

Apply rules based on how much is in the customer's cart.

Condition When to use it
Minimum cart value Rule only applies when the cart is at or above this amount
Maximum cart value Rule only applies when the cart is at or below this amount

Example: Hide "Cash on Delivery" when the cart is over $500 by setting a minimum cart value of $500. (Plus only)

Customer eligibility

Apply rules based on who the customer is.

Condition When to use it
Customer tags Only apply the rule if the customer has (or doesn't have) specific tags
Customer is logged in Only apply the rule for customers with an account who are signed in
Guest customers Only apply the rule for customers checking out as guests

Example: Rename "Net 30 Terms" to "Net 30 Terms (Wholesale Only)" so customers understand it's for approved buyers.

Products in cart

Apply rules based on what products are in the cart.

Condition When to use it
Product tags Only apply the rule if the cart contains products with specific tags
Product types Only apply the rule for certain product types
Specific products Only apply the rule when specific products are in the cart
Collections Only apply the rule when products from certain collections are in the cart

Example: Hide "Buy now, pay later" options when the cart contains products tagged "final-sale" — preventing installment disputes on non-refundable items. (Plus only)

Shipping address

Apply rules based on where the order is being shipped.

Condition When to use it
Shipping country Only apply the rule for orders shipping to specific countries
Shipping state/province Only apply the rule for orders shipping to specific states or provinces
Shipping zip/postal code Only apply the rule for orders shipping to specific zip or postal codes

Example: Hide "Cash on Delivery" for international orders where COD isn't supported by your fulfillment provider. (Plus only)

Active dates

Schedule when a rule should be active. This is useful for promotions, seasonal changes, or temporary payment adjustments.

Condition When to use it
Start date The rule won't apply until this date and time
End date The rule stops applying after this date and time

Example: During a flash sale, you want to disable "Buy now, pay later" to speed up checkouts. Set the start and end dates to match your sale window — the rule automatically activates and deactivates. (Plus only)

Tip: You can use just a start date (rule activates on that date and stays active), just an end date (rule is active now but stops on that date), or both (rule is only active during that window).

Things to know

  • At least one option must remain: Shopify requires at least one payment method at checkout. You can't hide all options.
  • Target provider names for credit cards: Use "Shopify Payments" (or your provider's name), not the "Credit card" label shown at checkout.
  • Hide and reorder require Plus: Only rename is available on non-Plus Shopify plans. This is a Shopify platform limitation.
  • Payment provider limitations: Some payment providers control their own display names and icons. Renaming may only affect the text label, not the icon.
  • Rules are evaluated in order: If multiple rules could apply, the first matching rule takes effect.
