Troubleshooting: Why My Order Limits Aren't Working
If your order limits are not working, rules are not being enforced, customers can still add products to cart or checkout, or Shopify is not recognizing an active rule, this guide will help you troubleshoot the issue.
Start here for general rule issues before checking feature-specific guides like price limits, weight limits, mixed cart limits, allowed quantities, or customer purchase limits.
Start Here: Basic Checks
Before diving into specific issues, verify these fundamentals — they apply to all rule types:
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| 1. Is the rule active and saved? | Open your rule in DC Order Limits. Confirm it shows "Active" status (not Draft or Disabled). After any changes, click "Save." |
| 2. Are the correct products selected? | Check "Product Eligibility" — does it include the product you're testing? If using tags, confirm the product has that tag in Shopify. |
| 3. Are you testing in the right place? | Order Limits enforce at cart and checkout. If you're only checking the product page, the limit won't show there. |
| 4. Has Shopify synced the rule? | After saving a new rule, wait 2-3 minutes for Shopify to pick it up. You can also go to Preferences → "Sync Products" to force a refresh. |
If all four checks pass and limits still aren't working, identify your rule type below.
What type of rule are you using?
Different rule types have different common issues. Select yours:
| Rule Type | What it does | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Order Limit (Quantity & Price) | Limits per cart/checkout — resets after each order | Order Limit Issues |
| Customer Purchase Limit | Limits per customer across all orders (lifetime tracking) | Customer Purchase Limit Issues |
| Mixed Cart Limit | Controls which products can be purchased together | Mixed Cart Issues |
| Allowed Quantities / Increments | Requires specific quantities (e.g., multiples of 5) | Quantity/Increment Issues |

Order Limit (Quantity & Price) Issues
"Customers can add more than the limit to their cart"
Check: Is the limit applying to the right scope?
- Grouping set to "Per Product" → Each product has its own limit. A max of 2 means 2 of Product A AND 2 of Product B.
- Grouping set to "Any Item" → All products share one limit. A max of 2 means 2 total across everything.
→ Understanding Product Grouping Options
"Customer bought the product before, but can buy again"
This is expected behavior for Order Limits. Order Limits only restrict the current cart — they reset after checkout.
If you want to limit how many times a customer can ever buy a product (across multiple orders), use a Customer Purchase Limit instead.
→ Setting Up Lifetime / Once-Per-Customer Limits
Customer Purchase Limit Issues
"Customer can buy again after a previous order"
You may be using the wrong rule type. If you set up a "Quantity & Price Limit" (Order Limit), those only restrict the current cart and reset after checkout.
For lifetime or once-per-customer tracking, make sure you're using a Customer Purchase Limit — it's the only rule type that tracks purchase history across all orders.
→ Which Limit Type Should I Use?
"Guests or non-logged-in customers bypass the limit"
Customer Purchase Limits track purchases by customer account. If someone isn't logged in, the app can't identify them until checkout (when they enter their email).
Fix: Set "Guest Customer Handling" to "Block and require login" to enforce limits from the start.
→ When Do Customers Need to Be Logged In?
"Customer is logged in but limit isn't enforcing"
Check the customer's purchase history. The app tracks all past orders. If the customer already bought this product, they may have reached their limit.
To check: Go to the rule → "View usage history" → search for the customer.
To reset: Use Shopify Flow or contact support.

"Tagged customers aren't being limited" (or non-tagged customers are being limited)
If you're using customer tags:
- Tags are case-sensitive — "VIP" ≠ "vip" ≠ "Vip"
- "Customers with Specific Tags" means the rule ONLY applies to those customers — everyone else is unaffected
- "Excluded Customer Tags" means the rule applies to everyone EXCEPT those customers
→ Why Customer Tag Rules Require Login
"Buying Product A affects the limit for Product B"
Check your Grouping setting:
- "Any Item" = All products share one counter (this is probably the cause)
- "Per Product" = Each product has an independent counter

"Limits work in-store but not via Shopify Bundles"
This is a known limitation. Shopify Bundles may not pass variant data correctly for lifetime tracking, which can cause limits to not apply as expected.
Fix: Contact support for possible workarounds.

"Monthly or yearly limits aren't resetting"
Customer Purchase Limits track lifetime totals by default. They don't automatically reset on a schedule.
For time-based limits (monthly caps, yearly allowances), you need to set up a Shopify Flow workflow that resets counts on your desired interval.

Mixed Cart Limit Issues
"Customers can still add both products to cart"
Mixed Cart Limits block checkout, not cart additions. The customer can add both products to their cart, but they'll be blocked when they try to check out.
If you want to block at the cart level, check your theme's cart page for our error message display.
Allowed Quantities / Increment Issues
"Customer can add quantities that aren't in my allowed list"
Allowed Quantities enforce at checkout, not on the product page. The customer can type any number, but invalid quantities will be blocked at checkout.
General Issues (All Rule Types)
"Works for me but not for customers"
Testing tips:
- Always test in an incognito/private browser window
- For Customer Purchase Limits, test with a new customer account that has no order history
- Check if you have a customer tag that exempts you from the rule
"Rule worked before but stopped working"
- Did someone disable the rule or change its settings?
- Did the product's tags change in Shopify?
- Is the app still installed and active? Check Shopify Admin → Settings → Checkout → "Checkout Rules"
